Anxiety/Stress
Stress and Anxiety often go hand in hand and can have a detrimental effect on our lives. Stress is often referred to as a generic term, is not always a bad thing, and some people are very good at dealing with particular stressful events and circumstances, whereas others would find those same events very difficult to deal with.
Anxiety is a feeling of unease, and everyone experiences this feeling from time to time. However, in some cases this feeling can become severe or prolonged, and starts to interfere with everyday life. This can be debilitating and is often associated with other conditions, such as deperssion.
Effective Treatment for Anxiety
Social Anxiety is the fear of social situations and feelings of self-consciousness, inferiority and a fear of being "judged".
These anxieties and fears can lead a person to feelings of embarassment, inadequacy and depression.
This is a very common problem and millions of people suffer from it every day. A recent study in the USA found that it was the third largest psychological disorder after depression and alcoholism.
Social Anxiety/Phobia typically begins in childhood. As humans, we can become very good at "putting a face on things" and hiding our anxieties from others, but ultimately trying to keep these feelings under wraps all the time will just make the whole situation worse.
Sometimes a sufferer will be anxious in a specific situation, such as public speaking, while more often the sufferer will be nervous and uncomfortable in almost all social situations.
A person who feels like this may experience blushing, sweating, a racing heart, trembling, fear, upset tummy and dry mouth. This person knows that their anxiety does not make sense.............but that still does not make it disappear. These anxieties persist even in people who have to "face their fears" every day.
In some cases we can end up with panic, or anxiety attacks. These attacks usually last between 5 - 10 minutes but the symptoms can often be severe and feel very alarming.
The good news is that there is help available and social anxiety is the most common problem that I treat
